How Long Does It Really Take to Learn German (A1 to B1 or B2)?

8 October 2026

From zero to B1 is a few hundred hours — here's the real timeline by level, plus the two habits that get you there faster.

Here's the honest answer: getting to B1 from zero usually takes a few hundred hours of focused study. B2 adds a good chunk more on top of that.

The rough numbers by level

Goethe-Institut teaching-hour estimates from zero: A1 60 to 150, A2 150 to 260, B1 260 to 490, B2 450 to 600 hours, cumulative.
Goethe-Institut teaching-hour estimates by level (cumulative).

The Goethe-Institut gives planning estimates in teaching hours, counted from zero. Treat them as a map, not a promise.

  • A1: about 60–150 hours
  • A2: about 150–260 hours
  • B1: about 260–490 hours
  • B2: about 450–600 hours

These are ballpark figures, and they're cumulative — so B1 already includes everything below it. Course and exam rules vary by institute and your situation, so check the Goethe-Institut FAQ for the official details. If the levels themselves are new to you, I break them down in my guide to the A1–C1 levels.

What actually speeds you up

Two things make a real difference. First, already knowing another language — your brain reuses patterns it has seen before. Second, immersion: learning while you live in Germany puts the language in front of you all day.

And one habit beats everything else. Consistency wins over cramming — twenty focused minutes every day moves you faster than one long weekend session.

So how do you plan it?

Pick your target level first. B1 is the common goal for Ausbildung, the Chancenkarte and family reunification, so that's where I point most students.

Then protect a small daily slot and keep it. That's the whole secret — in my course we build around short daily reps so the hours actually add up. If you're getting ready before the move, here's my take on the best way to learn German before moving.
