German for Nurses: What Level Do You Need to Work in Germany?

B2 gets your nursing qualification recognised in Germany — here's how to start lower and which Pflege exam you actually need.
The short answer: to work as a nurse in Germany, you need B2 German to get your qualification recognised in most federal states. B1 on its own is generally not enough for the recognition itself.
Why B2 is the real target
Recognition of your foreign nursing qualification is called the Berufserlaubnis. The standard language requirement for it is B2 (CEFR) in most states.
That makes sense — you'll be talking with patients, doctors and families every shift, often about things that really matter.
Here's the part people miss: you usually only have to prove B2 by the time your recognition certificate (the Urkunde) is issued — not on day one.
Can you start with less than B2?
Yes. Through the recognition-partnership route you can enter with A2, but it comes with conditions.
- A German employment contract
- A recognition partnership with that employer
This route is popular because it lets you move to Germany and keep improving your German while you already work. So A2 can get you in the door, but B2 is still where you need to land before the paperwork is done.
Which exam actually counts
For nursing, two language exams are built for exactly this situation:
- Goethe-Zertifikat B2 PRO Pflege
- telc B2 Pflege
Both test the German you actually use on the ward. Not sure which one fits you? I compare them in my guide on choosing between the Goethe and telc exams.
What if you come in through an Ausbildung?
Nursing isn't only a recognition path — many people train here from scratch. The language picture is different, and I break it down on my German for Ausbildung page and in my post on the German level you need for an Ausbildung visa.
One honest caveat: the exact level and process vary by federal state and recognition authority, so always check the competent recognition office for your target state. Make it in Germany's nursing page is a solid starting point.
