Goethe vs telc: Which German Exam Should You Take?

8 October 2026

There's no single "best" German exam — here's how to choose between Goethe and telc based on who's actually asking for it.

Short answer: there's no single winner. The right German exam is the one your authority — embassy, employer, university or recognition office — actually names.

Goethe vs telc: the real difference

Goethe vs telc compared: Goethe is the global academic brand; telc is strong for jobs and immigration and often cheaper.
Goethe and telc, side by side.

Both the Goethe-Zertifikat and telc follow the same CEFR levels and are widely recognised. Neither is simply "better" — it depends on who's asking.

Goethe is the globally known brand, strong in academic and cultural contexts. telc is strong across Europe, especially for jobs and immigration, and is often cheaper with more flexible exam dates.

Going to a German university?

Then this comparison mostly doesn't apply to you. For university admission, the academic-specific tests are TestDaF, DSH and telc C1 Hochschule.

I break that down in my guide on which German level you need to study at a German university. If you're aiming for the usual B1–B2 certificates instead, start with my B1 and B2 exam prep.

How to actually decide

  • Ask the authority for the exact certificate name and level they require.
  • Take that exam — not the one that sounds more prestigious.
  • If both are accepted, choose by cost, available dates and format.

Once Goethe B1 is your target, follow my step-by-step guide on how to pass the Goethe B1 exam.

One honest caveat

Requirements vary by case and by authority, and they change. Always confirm with the official source — see the Goethe-Institut exam overview — before you book.

Good to know: Goethe certificates don't expire, but many authorities still want recent results, so don't sit the exam years too early.
