How to Pass the Goethe B1 Exam: Format and a Simple Plan

The Goethe B1 exam has four modules you can pass one at a time — here's the format and a simple plan to clear it.
Short version: learn the exam in its exact format, start speaking out loud on day one, and treat the four modules as four separate goals. Once you pass, the certificate is yours for life.
What's actually on the B1 exam
The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 has four modules: Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. Each one is scored on its own.
That's the good news. If you don't pass a module, you retake only that one — not the whole exam.
B1 is the common bar for the Ausbildung visa, German citizenship and a lot of jobs. If you're heading into an apprenticeship, check which German level the Ausbildung visa needs before you book.
A simple plan that works
You don't need a clever method. You need the right reps.
- Practise with real exam-format model tasks, so nothing on the day is a surprise.
- Do full, timed modules — not just random exercises.
- Rotate all four skills every week: Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking.
- Track each module separately and spend your time where you're weakest.
Don't skip Speaking
Speaking is the part most people fear. The fix is boring but it works: practise out loud, early and often, ideally with a real person.
In my course I'd rather you stumble through a spoken answer ten times now than meet it cold in the exam room.
Before you book
Exam details and requirements can change, and what counts for your visa or citizenship depends on your case and the authority involved. Always confirm with the official Goethe-Institut B1 page.
